Welcome to Welcome to Wigan Canoeing Group

The canoeing group came together in 1992 when a few local paddlers decided that there was an opportunity to develop canoeing in the Wigan area. Wigan is in the North West of England about 20 miles west of Manchester. The aim was to develop the group in a way that would promote the fun side of being on the water, offering access to all.

Since those early days we have seen the group develop year by year attracting many people both young and not so young into our club. We have taken more than Thirty of those members through the British Canoe Union (BCU) coaching scheme. This has generated a volunteer force of instructors who give their time throughout the year teaching the many novices who wish to join us on the water.

We have a very active calendar with indoor canoeing during the winter months and placid water paddling at Scotmans Flash during the summer. For the intermediate and advanced paddlers we have an ongoing programme of white water trips during the wetter periods. We will often be seen surfing the waves or sea touring when the rivers are dry.

The group has a very social feel. We meet once a month to discuss future events, which include family weekends, bar-b-ques, our popular open day or planning for our infamous Christmas party.

As a club we try to be as inclusive as possible and put as much effort into developing a new recruit to canoeing as we do when organising a trip to the Alps.

If you're interested in finding out more then you may contact us here, use our Discussion Forum, or just come down on a Thursday evening and we'll see you on the water.
